On June 23, 2017, Coral Denakis, now 27, woke up on the morning of her wedding day to find a car on fire outside her hotel. It quickly spread to the wall of her room. Her and fiancee, Matthew, now 28, had a lucky escape and got out, unharmed. Later that day, they married in a civil ceremony with both their parents at their side. Fast-forward a year later, the pair held a second wedding for extended family and friends. Coral’s parents put up 12 guests at their home, nearby the venue. But at 2am on June 23, exactly a year since their first wedding, Coral was startled awake by her mother screaming. The house was on fire. Thankfully all escaped unharmed but the family home burnt to the ground. Miraculously, Matthew’s Army uniform was found undamaged in a wardrobe and salvaged by firefighters. Coral had left her wedding gown in the car overnight. The pair went ahead with the wedding as planned later that day. Now the happy couple, who have been married nearly five years, joke that 23rd June is an unlucky date for them.
