Michael Chaplin, 21, and Darrell Hughes, 19, assaulted the disabled man and his father as they walked home along Hull's Spring Bank. Hughes repeatedly struck the father with a house "for sale" sign. The father and son later revealed they both thought they were going to die. In the son's victim impact statement read to Hull Crown Court, he said: "I was just terrified. I feared for my life and my dad's life "My instinct was to flee.
