What lies beneath this building site? Britain's great hope of winning the pre-WW2 arms race against Nazi Germany. The “Shadow Tunnels” under Birmingham's Longbridge site in are the remnants of Lord Austin's secret plans that were hatched to bolster British military might in the face of German military aggression. Pictures show the site where munitions workers produced the Merlin engines that powered the Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes used to win control of the British skies during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Local urban explorer Tom Robinson, 20, delved into the tunnel to bring back exclusive picture of Great Britain's hidden wartime heritage
